Homeschool Curriculum Part 3: The Fun Stuff

Lest you were worried: Yes, we survived Homeschooling Week 1. I just was too tired to write about it. Actually, I got to feeling really sick at lunchtime on Friday, so we only did what we really needed to.

This second week is going much smoother, and it feels like we’re starting to settle into a pattern. We’ll see if it sticks.

Fun curriculum

Some of the fun stuff we’re using to add to our core curriculum.

Curriculum Part 3: The Fun Stuff

Homeschool would be super boring if all we did was workbook stuff all the time. Also, it wouldn’t engage the girls’ minds in different ways, or include many hands-on types of activities. Here are some of the fun things we’re adding in when appropriate.

  • Conceptual Math Bingo
    • We’ve got Whole Numbers, What Time Is It?, Money, and Early Fractions. The thing that’s challenging about this game is that the card that gets drawn for whatever number will be called gives six different ways for the caller to describe that number. For example: the number might be 54, but the caller can say: “50 + 4″ or “6 x 9″ or “count by 2’s: 50, 52, __.” Makes the kiddos think about the different ways numbers (or other values) relate to each other.
  • Various Word Games (Quiddler, Scrabble, etc.)
    • We haven’t tried all of these yet. I’ll let you know how they turn out.
  • Visual Acquity Games: (Spot It, Flash Focus for Nintendo DS)
    • Visual Processing is something M-bug struggles with. Games that sharpen both attention and visual skills are a must.
  • Flashcards, Shape-building blocks, and other assorted games
    • Some of these are math, and others are just general skills, like puzzles.
  • BrainPOP and BrainPOP Jr.
    • The girls loved these online programs when they used them through their virtual charter. They have fun videos about many subjects, as well as other activities for further study.

What educational “fun stuff” do you use?

We’re on Day 4 of our first week of traditional homeschooling. Day 3 didn’t go so well. Decoder Man and I spent half the night before awake for no discernable reason, and then I finally fell asleep just before I should have been getting up. Slept late … you get the idea. So we just […]

So, we’ve gotten through Day 2 of our new homeschooling adventure, and I’m pleased to say that it went much better. Everything went much faster than I expected, and I ended up having Bubbles go further in math and M-bug do more grammar than I’d originally planned. I’m wondering if having them do a bit […]

Traditional Homeschool: Day 1

My brain hurts. We’ve moved to Texas. We made the 1704-mile trip over four days, taking a week break at my parents’ house in the middle of it. The girls and I have been in our new home for just over a week. We spent half of that first week trying to put the house […]

Wow. I can’t believe it’s been over two months since I blogged anything. Actually, scratch that. Yes, I can. Here’s what all has happened: The girls went to Seattle to visit family after Christmas. Decoder Man and I started going through our house to get it ready to sell. You might remember that in early […]

Getting Behind in Life

I haven’t posted anything besides macro photos in three weeks, and that’s just because I had several weeks’ worth of macro posts in the queue. I feel like I’m getting behind in my own life, not to mention my blog. (It’s been so long that I’ve almost forgotten how to use WordPress, and I just […]

Chaos In Review: Week of September 30

I think I’ll start posting a quick review of how things went in our household the week before. Sometimes I get so stuck looking at one big problem in our lives that I miss the successes in other areas, so it’s good for me to look at the big picture.  Also, that way I can […]

School Schedule, Take Two!

by Caroline October 4, 2012

Well, it should come as no surprise that I’ve yet again revised the girls’ school schedule. We were feeling a bit rushed and under the gun while following the first one, so we’re trying something closer to a block schedule. This new school schedule allows us to spend more time on science and social studies in […]

My daughter, M-bug, has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS, which stands for Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified. It’s a really big name for a disorder on the austim spectrum. Children who have PDD-NOS usually have trouble both communicating and relating socially to the people around them. It can be tricky to diagnose, because it […]

Sorry to leave you all hanging, everybody. This last week has been crazy, but good, owing in part to the IEP meeting I had at the girls’ school on the 7th, and a new homeschool schedule. You might recall that I was having an extremely hard time keeping up with everything that the girls need […]

Not Sure I Can Survive Homeschooling

by Caroline September 5, 2012

Last time I walked you through what a typical day of our virtual homeschooling looks like. It’s been crazy, but on the whole, we’ve been doing OK. I’m not OK today. I don’t know what it is, but I’m halfway to either freaking out or shutting down right now. M-bug had her first day of educational […]
